How to create a cozy family room-Heards Creek Project Reveal

Houses are just houses until you make them your home. You have to combine the personalities of the owners with a style that fits to make their home feel safe and warm. That’s exactly what we did for this project.

Originally, the homeowners purchased this house and filled it with their combined furniture from when they were married. None of it went together. They knew that, but were waiting for the right time to invest in furniture. After about 9 months of living in their new home, they decided it was time and contacted us. They wanted us to help them with the main family room that opened to the kitchen and dining area.

Here is what the spaces looked like when we arrived:

They were open to replacing everything. We are always excited when we get to start from scratch and envision a whole new space.

This family has one small child. We wanted to make sure we incorporated pieces that would last and be able to handle “wear and tear” over time. We made sure to use performance fabrics on everything and heavy, durable wood that could take a beating.

When we work on furnishing projects we like to present 2 alternatives to clients. Typically, all the pieces can be mixed and matched. It gives clients options, but not too many to overwhelm them. Here are the room boards we presented to these clients.

We start with room layouts so they can understand the vision:

Then we move on to boards that show all of the actual pieces we want to use:

Here is the other option we presented:

Sometimes, even with 2 options that are certain pieces that the client still needs to see additional options. We go back and take the confirmed pieces and find the missing ones to complete the overall look.

In this case the client combined many of the options from both plans. We did need to find additional options for the barstools and media piece. This whole process from start to finish can take several weeks. It really depends on how many spaces we are working on at a time per project. The more spaces, the longer it takes. We really like to present as much as possible at one time. It really helps in establishing the overall look for the home.

Once decisions are made, we invoice the clients for the furniture and get busy ordering it. The furniture takes anywhere from 8-16 weeks to arrive. When the pieces arrive, they go to a receiving warehouse that checks all of it in and makes sure there are no damages. Once we receive confirmation, we set up a delivery date to install everything at one time.

We love how these spaces came together. Using neutral colors with a heavy emphasis on one contrast color, green, we created a striking home. The house has spectacular large windows that allow you to see the backyard. We decided to use that as a compliment for the interior. We brought the outside in.
